    Children’s Meeting:

Hymn 38 - The Gospel bells are ringing Prayer

We’ve seen how the Lord took Philip from the revival in Samaria and sent him to Gaza in the desert to meet an Ethiopian eunuch. This eunuch had gone to Jerusalem to worship, for somehow he had heard of Judaism all the way from his country. He was heading home, but was still looking for answers to his heart’s questions. He had bought a scroll of the prophet Isaiah (which would have been expensive) and was reading it as he drove along in his chariot.

Acts 8:28-31. The Holy Spirit told Philip to go near to the chariot, and so Philip heard what the Eunuch was reading. The Lord was preparing this man for salvation. He had brought him to Jerusalem, had him buy a scroll, be reading the right part, and had Philip come along at the right time. This man was one of the very first Gentiles to be saved. Philip didn’t start to preach the Gospel at him at first, but instead asked, “Do you understand what you’re reading?” The eunuch asked back, “How can I unless someone explains it too me?” He then request Philip come up and ride with him in the chariot.

Vv32-35. The Eunuch was reading in Isaiah 53. He knew that it was prophecy, but wondered who Isaiah was talking about. It was a good place to start preaching the gospel from. Philip did so, and told this man about Jesus. It was like the time in Luke 24:25-27 when Jesus preached about Jesus, all from the Old Testament. Philip did the same thing here.

V36, 38. The eunuch believed what Philip told him, which apparently included baptism, for when they came to some water he asked to be baptized. Philip baptized him, and afterwards was caught away by the Holy Spirit. The Eunuch, however, went on his way rejoicing. He wasn’t rejoicing when he left Jerusalem earlier, but now he had heard the gospel, believed it, obeyed it, and it had filled him with joy. His questions had been answered. He was still going to a heathen county, but now he was saved.

Reading Meeting

John 6:52-71

The Jews were striving, wondering how Jesus could give them His flesh to eat. One thing you’ll notice is that bread doesn’t bleed. We need the flesh and blood; the living bread and His blood.

Darby translates verse fifty-three as, “Jesus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Unless ye shall have eaten the flesh of the Son of man, and drunk His blood, ye have no life in yourselves”. Verses fifty-three and -four present salvation in two parts. That of the soul and body (which isn’t complete until we are in glory). Salvation isn’t a passing moment. We eat and drink by faith taking it in. Our faith feeds on Him and accepts Him as Saviour. The just live by faith. Our life starts with His death.

You can’t lose your salvation. Once you’re saved you’re always saved. But there is also the aspect of going on in Jesus. These verses speak of personal communion with Jesus day by day.

1.John 1:3

It’s wonderful to be saved, but we must go on in that fullness of joy in communion with Father and Son. God also enjoys this fellowship with us.

Verse fifty-seven shows our dependence on Him. He said, “Without me ye can do nothing”. Jesus depended on the Father. We depend on Him.

Jesus explained how that the bread He was talking about was different from the manna their fathers had in the wilderness. When one is saved they have a spiritual and divine life that never dies. The body may die, but the person’s soul never will. It’s sad that religions say you can lose your salvation. The Old Testament manna had to do with the physical, but this was all about the spiritual need that Jesus magnified.
