Psalm 119

With 176 verses Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible. Most of the verses have a reference to God’s Word. We know the importance as Christians to spend time in the word. Sometimes you’ll see a picture of a malnutrition person. I wonder if we got a spiritual picture taken if we would look malnutritioned or healthy.

The Effects Of Scripture

  1. Quicken - Vs. 25, 27, 93, 107, 149 Quicken is to make alive. It’s to give life. God’s Word can be spoken to an unbeliever and it can quicken them.

1 Peter 1:23-25

Not only can God’s Word give life but it can also rekindle us. It can strengthen us spiritually.

  1. Comfort - Vs. 84, 50, 52, 76, 165 In our lives we have times of trials and discouragement. We need comfort. If we memorize scripture we can recall it when we need it and it can comfort us. Being a Christian doesn’t mean no trials but it does mean He will comfort us and take care of us.
  2. Direction/Understanding - Vs. 18, 98-100, 104, 105, 130 We make decisions as we go through life. How we live our lives is made from those decisions. The more we look to God’s Word for help the better our decisions will be. We should look to God for help. He will give us understanding. His word is a lamp. It will show us the way.
  3. Purity - Vs. 9, 11, 36, 37, 133 Even though we are saved we still have the devil. He will tempt us, but we can look to God’s Word for help. We need to take heed to it and we need to hide it in our hearts. We can then use it to fight the enemy. It’s what Jesus use to fight Satan in the wilderness. we need to keep our eyes on the Lord. Satan wants to take control.

From personal experience it can be hard to memorize scripture. I heard this quote from D. L. Moody. “The only way to keep a broken vessel full is to keep it always under the tap.”

  1. Joy + Delight - Vs. 14, 16, 24, 77

We should be happy to spend time in the Word. As you get older it should be a habit to have time in it everyday. The scripture will put joy in you heart.

Vs. 72, 127, 162

Scripture is so valuable. The psalmist knew that. Spending time in the word will help you so much. The world isn’t able to help you in life. It’s not going to give you directions. I trust we can all have a greater appreciation of God’s Word.

Reading Meeting

John 14:13-31

What does it mean to ask in Jesus name? Somethings we pray for we see God answer. Other thing we seem to pray for for a long time. He may had said he would, but He didn’t say when He would. The person who it praying must be in a right state.

The Lord was going away, but He was giving them something to comfort them as they went forward. He was sending the Comforter.

We pray in His name. That should be more then just the words at the end of a prayer. We’re praying in a name that is above every name for things we believe to be His will. Jesus said that we don’t receive because we ask amiss or because we don’t ask at all. He wants us to ask. We’re not bothering Him. It shows our dependence on Him.

What commandments was He referring to. Was it the Ten Commandments or the new one He had just given? When we obey it manifests our love for Him. It’s not just saying we love Him, but doing His will. Commandments includes His will. The Lord helps us to live in these things.

He said He was sending another Comforter. The Comforter is the Lord Himself, but He couldn’t abide with them forever. The Spirit of God came to Samson on occasion to accomplish certain acts, but it didn’t abide forever. The Spirit of Truth was being given to His people to abide forever. It came down at Pentecost and still abides. It isn’t a bodily presence, but the indwelling Spirit of the Creator.

It is possible to grieve the Spirit. Sensitivity of Spirit can take different forms. We want to be in the spirit on the Lord’s Day and be in fellowship with the Lord together. We have communion with God through the Spirit of God. Jesus died so we can experience life through the Spirit of God in oneness.

The Christian’s body goes up when the Lord comes back. The Spirit goes too. What will be left in this world when that happens?

Jesus had refereed to the Spirit of Truth here already. Jesus claimed to be the Truth. The world has given up truth. It is no longer valued.

The Trinity is an amazing oneness, but we don’t pray to the Holy Spirit. Although it is three persons as we understand it, that is not acceptable. The world cannot receive the Holy Spirit. To have that you must have the Christian life. It seems to simple, but they can’t understand it. Unless the Spirit works in the natural man they won’t understand.
