Psalm 27: 1 - 4, 11, 14

V. 1 - 3. Last week we heard about David and Goliath, this is the same David writing this Psalm. We’re going to start with the phrase “the Lord is my light”. This is the first time in the Bible that the Lord is mention being something. Back in the beginning when God made the world he created Light. Light shows things. If you were in a pitch black room and you opened the blind you would then be able to see what was in the room. When Jesus came into the world he was light. He showed or revealed the sin of the world.

There is a story that Uncle Gord use to tell. There was this sailor on a ship and he had disobeyed the rules. So to punish him the captain brought him down to the very bottom of the ship, into a room that didn’t have any light. After awhile the captain sent down his first mate to see if he would repent. But the sailor was very content down there and didn’t want to repent. So the first mate went back upstairs. This happen a couple more times.

The first mate asked the captain, “Maybe we should change the punishment, then he might repent.”

But the captain said, “No, just bring him a light and we will see if he repents.”

So he brought him a light. When the disobedient sailor saw all the dust, dirt and mice he quickly repented. Light reveals things.

In order to see light you have to have your eyes open. David is enjoying the thoughts of what God is to him. The light of His word shows us what he’s like. You have to have your spiritual eyes open, though. If you are saved you have spiritual eyes.

V. 4. David desired one thing; to have a good relationship with God. To be near him and to talk with him. We enjoy our friend’s and family’s company; like that David enjoyed God’s. David loved and persued God. What we love and peruse comes out in what we say, do and think.

There’s a saying that goes “It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.” The Christian life is something that is slow and continuous; not just a short thing. We need to spend time in God’s word and talking to him everyday. If you do that you will be a continuous light. If you’re going to have a relationship with Him, then you need to spend time with Him.

V. 11. David wanted God to lead him. He spent time learning His will and way. We need to be willing to let God lead and listen to Him. If you let Him lead you won’t get into as much trouble and it will be easier to know what to do.

V. 14. As we wait for the Lord; he will help us. He will give us peace and strength. David spent a lot of time with the Lord and He helped him keep on the right path.
