Hymn 112 - Naught have I gotten, but what I received

Verses

Because of what happened at the gate Beautiful Peter had a chance to talk to the people at the temple, but the Pharisees soon showed up to put a stop to it.

In the passage we will read there is a bit of figurative speech. For example, we all know the story of the good Shepherd who sought and found His sheep, Jesus really isn’t a Shepherd and we aren’t really sheep. It’s a figure of speech.

Acts 4:4-12

Peter preached and five thousand men were saved. Now, though, he is in front of Caiaphas and Annas who were involved in condemning Jesus. They challenged him about the miracle wondering in who’s name and power it was done in.

We can see that Peter is a very different then before during Jesus crucifixion. The power of the Holy Ghost had changed him. Peter told the Pharisees that after they had killed Jesus God raised Him from the dead and that it was in His power that the man was healed.

Jesus is compared to a cornerstone here. He went into the temple God is building. Everyone who is saved is also saved. But the cornerstone is very important. This is figurative language. Caiaphas and Annas were supposed to be the builders, but they had rejected and crucified the cornerstone.

There is a Jewish legend about the time when Solomon temple was being built. The stone were shaped at the quarry and then sent o the building site. Well, one stone that was sent baffled the builders. It didn’t seem to fit anywhere so they rolled it to the bottom of a hill. They were almost done the building,, so the told the people at the quarry they were ready for the cornerstone. “We sent that up a while ago,” they told them. Originally confused on what could have happened to it, one man suggested that they take a look at the stone they a thrown away. Sure enough it was the missing stone.

Verse twelve is the only verse in the Bible that says, “we must be saved”. It is only by Jesus’ name we can be saved.

Reading Meeting

John 5:17-31

The Sabbath is first mentioned at the beginning of Genesis. It was meant for rest. Jesus rested after the six days of creation, and then sin came into the world. We don’t know how long that was, but it doesn’t sound like a very long time. It was God who made the clothes for Adam and Eve. They lived through God’s provision. “Hitherto” is like saying, “until now”.

God has no faults or difficulties. I wonder how He felt when He saw the condition of the people on the porches. God isn’t resting while His people are floundering in sin and ruin. The way He healed one man and then told him to carry his bed was provocative.

Jesus made it clear that He was working not resting, He broke the Jews Sabbath, and made Himself equal with God. That is important to note because it meant that there weren’t two gods; one on earth and one in heaven. There is absolute harmony between Jesus and His Father. He said that those who had seen Him saw the Father. Jesus was a manifestation of God in the flesh.Everything He did was in perfect harmony with God, and a blessing to man.

Jesus then brings in the resurrection. This would have ticked any Sadducees there. Quicken means to make alive. This in not just about healing; it’s about life and death.

The Son is responsible for the judgement.

Many scriptures show how Jesus was sent in human form. But that didn’t demote Him. He still deserves honour.

When someone expresses faith in the Lord they are saved. Jesus takes them out of the state of death and bring them into life. You’ll either have eternal life or eternal death. Darby put “condemnation” as “judgment”. I trust all of us have heard the voice of the Son of God.

We have a Gospel. Jesus hadn’t done it yet in this passage. He couldn’t preach the Gospel we do.He told them that is was coming.
