Hymn 215 Happy they who trust in Jesus

Prayer

Psalm 1

A tree planted by a river has a constant supply of water. It grows strong and its leaves are green.

This Psalm compares the righteous against the ungodly. The righteous has had his sin forgiven. In order to have our sin forgiven we must trust the Lord as our Saviour. The tree mentioned in verse three is a picture of the righteous.

The righteous man is blessed. Blessed means happy. His leaves are flourishing because he’s beside the river. He delights in God’s law and he meditates on it day and night. He also bears fruit, his leaves don’t wither, and everything he does prospers. He doesn’t go with the ungodly and he won’t sit the the scornful. Not only does he stay away from what’s wrong, but also purposely does what is right.

The river is like the Word of God. The righteous delight in God’s Word and meditate on it just like a cow chews the cud. Delight means that he finds pleasure in it. We can memorize a verse and later on we can say it over in our heard and think on it.

Jeremiah 17:7-8

This is another “blessed is the man”, but this time it is because he trusts in the Lord. His dependence and confidence is in the Lord. Their roots are in the river and are constantly being refreshed.

Growing trees isn’t a fast process. It’s the same with spiritual growth. We grow a little bit at a time growing strong for the Lord. The ungodly just goes to and fro with the wind. Our tree can be sturdily planted in the Word of God which doesn’t change.

Reading Meeting

John 4:39-54

One might think that the woman would be shy because of her history, but her testimony brought in others, and they believed because of what she said. Her testimony was, “is not this the Christ”. They later said that it was indeed the Christ the Saviour of the world. It must have been refreshing for Jesus to see their faith, They didn’t believe because of His works. In verse forty-eight we see that the Jews were always seeking signs. But the Samaritans believed Him for who He was.

You can only find God by faith. Science doesn’t consider revelation. God has reveled Himself through His Word and works. Here, we have the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, but God has still given man the ability to believe or disbelieve.

The woman’s testimony was an invitation. She was occupied with the water not the pot.

Jesus did another miracle when He went back to Galilee. I assume the noble man was Jewish, and his son was sick. He seemed to think that Jesus needed to be there for the healing to work. He had come a very long way for this. The Lord just gave the word, and his son was healed. The nobleman believed Him. The father believe on Jesus and the entire family did as well.

These miracles signify that Jesus was and is the Christ.
