Hymn 90 – Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power?

Prayer

Last time, we started looking at the coming of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost. Let’s remind ourselves what was promised. Acts 1:5-8. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would give the apostles power to become witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and finally the whole world. In John 14:16-17 He promised to send them another Comforter. The word “another” here means more of the same kind. The Holy Ghost would be like Jesus; however, they would not only sense His presence, but He would also dwell inside them.

Acts 2:1-4. The disciples had been in a house in Jerusalem, praying and waiting for God’s promised power. They had been doing this for ten days. Suddenly, their prayer meeting was interrupted by a mighty wind that filled the house. Then there appeared forked tongues of fire that sat on each of them. Two things were filled: the house, and the disciples. John 14 says that the Holy Spirit will be both with us and in us. He filled the house and was with them; He filled the believers and was in them. This was a real event, and it wasn’t a small thing. God, in the form of Spirit, came to Earth, but not just as a presence, but to indwell His people as a power, and give them special abilities. In the history of the universe, this is huge.

This event is what we call the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, and it only happened once. We enter it—we become filled and indwelled by the Holy Spirit—when we get saved. Many don’t understand this. We can’t comprehend how vast God is. He made the universe and think how massive it is! Now part of Him lives inside us.

There are some people who pray to the Holy Spirit, but we never see this happening in Scripture. We can ask the Lord for the Holy Spirit’s help, though, and He can accomplish great things through us.

Acts 2:5-11. There were tons of people in Jerusalem at this time, from many different nations. Under the power of the Holy Spirit, the disciples began preaching in different languages, and everyone was able to hear about God’s great work, salvation, in their own language. How was it possible? These men were Galileans! How had they learned these languages? The people were astonished. As we said, this was a big event; as big as Jesus being born.
