Ministry—Norman Burgess

In John’s gospel we have seven or eight “I am” statements made by the Lord Jesus in His ministry.  These are well known, I am the bread of life; I am the light of the world; I am the good shepherd; I am the true vine, etc.  These are all precious personal characteristics of what the Lord is for us.  They are all to His glory and honour.     Psalm 22, though written prophetically, we find, at least the first part, perfectly fulfilled at the cross, and provide accurate expressions of the feelings of the Lord in the hours of darkness of which we have read earlier.  Think of verse 6! Here we have another “I am” - “I am a worm”.  How different to those found in John’s gospel.  This one reminds us of how low He stooped in humility and shame to accomplish our redemption. Part of “Calvary’s depth of woe” when suffering for us.
