Ministry—Norman Burgess

Can we turn to John’s Gospel again for a moment; in our first little hymn, a precious little hymn, we had, “Came from Godhead’s fullest glory, down to Calvary’s depths of woe.” I was thinking of the words “came down.” We saw the One who was the brightness of Heaven coming down to the cross; Calvary was part of His coming down. John 6:38, 42, & 51. This is just one of the Lord’s discourses; he was speaking to the Pharisees. He was telling those who were opposed to Him that he had come down from Heaven. This morning we have remembered Him; he gave up the diadem on His brow for a crown of thorns; he laid down his spotless robe for a seamless garment. He left the scene where sin can never come, as Mr. Darby said in his hymn, to come to this sinful world. He was the Eternal Son, the Brightness of Heaven, but He came down and stooped to the depths to deal with sin and sins, to lay a foundation for salvation, and to bring us to Heaven. “Came from Godhead’s fullest glory, down to Calvary’s depths of woe”; He came to lift us up. He came down to earth to get a people. He wants us up there with him, and one day we will be. O how precious, he came down for us!

Children’s Meeting—Gordon Burgess

EG Hymn 82–Ere God had built the mountains, Prayer • See Planet sheet and “Sun vs. Son” chart for lesson outline and scriptures. • God had placed the earth at the perfect distance from the Sun. If it was any closer, we would all burn. If it were any farther, the earth would freeze over. • Chlorophyll–Chlorophyll molecules are very similar to human blood molecules. The only thing different is the very center of the molecule. So chlorophyll is really the life-blood of plants. It also gives plants their green colouring. Before people realized this, they covered celery with soil while it was growing, and it always came out white. Mr. Burgess knew a man who grew asparagus in a barn and got the same results. • Luke 24:32—Our hearts should burn while we are reading and meditating on the Bible. However, those who are unsaved will not burn while reading and meditating. • The Sun is important to our physical health: you have a gland called the pineal gland between your nose and your forehead. It collects ultraviolet light rays and uses them to build your immune system. It has been proven that people who work around ultraviolet light every day get sick less than those who don’t. The Son is very important to our spiritual health; without Him we would be spiritually dead.

Reading Meeting

Hebrews 7:1–28 • Ch 6:19—for your anchor to be both sure and steadfast, it has to be caught in a crack in a rock or some other firm substance. Also, you have to throw out your anchor before you begin to slide sideways; if you put it out after you start sliding, it will just bounce along the bottom, but if it is steadfastly hooked, it will tighten and hold you. For your anchor to get a strong hold, the cord needs to be three times as long as the distance to the bottom. • V. 20—John the Baptist was the forerunner of the Lord Jesus. He told the people that He was coming and pointed Him out when He came. Our forerunner is Jesus, He is in Heaven and we will be there, too, someday. He is there and is our solid ground for our anchor, which is anchored in the veil. He is also the cord between us and the anchor, our high priest and mediator. • The first part of chapter seven is a history of Melchisedec. The middle is doctrinal and the end is practical. • Melchisedec, king of Salem is brought before us clearly in Hebrews. The Old Testament is not too clear on who he really is, but this is an example of how the Old Testament is explained by the New Testament. When Abraham was returning from the slaughter of the kings, Melchisedec came on the scene and blessed Him. See Genesis 14:17 & 18. Jesus could not be an Aaronic high priest because He was from the tribe of Judah, not Levi. So instead he is a high priest after the order of Melchisedec. He is our high priest and forerunner there in glory so we can be there too! EG Hymn 202–How blessed a home—the Father’s house, Prayer
